What I’m Playing – Magicka

Magicka

See those little cloaked fellows above? You’re one of them. You’re not a member of some weird rainbow sect of the KKK, you’re a wizard. A wizard in an Action RPG type game where you run around the map smiting foes and such. Nothing too original there I’ll admit.

What jazzes this bad boy up is the casting system. There are 8 different types of elements that you can use – Fire, Water, Cold, Earth, Lightning, Arcane, Shield and Heal. You can cast up to 5 at once, and you can combine them however you want on the fly. Plus, some can be combined to form other elements…Fire and Water make Steam, Water and Cold make Ice. So you have a lot of different shit you can combo up in any way possible, and then cast at a specific target, on yourself, or as an area of effect spell.

Cast 4 Earth and 1 Shield on yourself and you’re protected within an earthen mound. Of course, you’re also trapped and unable to move until you smash your way out of it. Bad guy all wet in a river? Why not electrocute the bastard! Or freeze the water solid around him and beat him to death with your short sword. Get as creative as you want (and have time for).

Mix in spell books you can find which give you higher level element combo spells (Rain, for instance, or Meteor Shower) as well as a variety of different melee weapons and staffs with different characteristics, and you have a LOT of different ways you can fight.

Did I mention the often hilarious drawbacks that can happen? Did you cast rain and then lightning? Perhaps you get a bad ‘roll of the dice’ and just fried yourself to near death. You are going to die A LOT, by the way, so get used to it. Once the game’s multiplayer is fixed up, imagine 4 different cloaked wizards casting shit all over the screen that can also harm them and their allies, and you have a laugh riot of chaos.

Here’s a quick little video I threw together to show some of the different element abilities you can come up with, and these are just basic. Most of these you’ll figure out just by messing around with different combinations and seeing what you can discover, or by discovering spell tomes hidden all over the place.

First thing cast is fire, but fire and earth swaps out that flame plume for an actual fireball. Add in shield, and you get a brace of volcanoes acting to block all who try to advance from that direction. Water and steam just spray, but water and cold makes those ice shard projectiles that fly out like knives. Lightning shoots, but it shoots a lot more badass with a bit of arcane mixed in. Then I cast fire area of effect…and on myself, put it out with water cast on me, then healed with that cast on me. Just to sort of give a bit of an idea of some of the stuff I’ve been blathering about.

Finally, after smashing through the first group of goblins, I cast Meteor Shower. It’s powerful. It’s awesome. It totally backfired as two simultaneously hit me directly for 5,850 points of damage and left me a puddle of goo in the grass. Witness my totally awesome destruction!

It’s fun. It’s full of dialogue that’s actually pretty funny spoken in some bizarre fictional language. It’s $10.
