What I’m Watching – 44 Inch Chest

From the same guys who wrote Sexy Beast, another excellent movie featuring a performance by Ben Kingsley that made him one of the nastiest, scariest motherfuckers in the history of cinema (seriously…GANDHI! Fucking GANDHI was terrifying!). So see that if you haven’t already!

I’m not going to include the trailer, because in typical fucked up trailer fashion it gives far too much away. There are several instances in this flick where you suspect something has happened, only to find out it hasn’t…or expect something which never comes, and the trailer screws at least one of them up.

Despite that, it isn’t a ‘twist’ movie. Don’t expect some (increasingly dreadful) M Night Shyamalan ‘Gotcha!’ moment anywhere near the end of this movie. It’s a full on character drama, featuring pretty much the people you see above spending most of their time on one set. It’s almost like a bunch of Brits snatched a Mamet script, flew it over the Atlantic and filmed it with a bunch of Brit actors after inserting the word cunt in to the dialogue approximately 729 times.

How in the Hell do they pull that off? Seriously, British gangster movies are some of the most foul mouthed harangues ever captured on film, and yet it just seems to work for them. You barely even notice as the various obscenity bomb laden lines of speech fall from the mouths of the performers. It’s really quite astounding. Not that this is a gangster film. I mean it is…sort of…but not really. :)

Anyway, if for no other reason see it because Ray Winstone (he’d be the guy in the middle of that poster there) is amazing. Everyone else is good as well, especially Ian McShane playing a character the likes of which I have never previously seen him play.

I’ll give this a watch, as I’m a huge fan of Sexy Beast.

On the heels of my “Moon” recommendation in your last entry, I’ve got another movie for you—Pandorum.

“Two crew members are stranded on a spacecraft and quickly – and horrifically – realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It’s pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the ship. They can’t remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission?”

While not as good as Moon, I quite enjoyed this film.

(Mind you, I didn’t expect anything going in.)
