What I’m Playing

Random Quote

I never wished anybody dead in my life, but I have certainly been pleased to read certain death notices. — Winston Churchill

For some reason the first idea that came to mind for today about what to blog was to talk about other places I’ve written things. I don’t know why. Seeing as the alternative would probably end up being 277 words about why I hate marzipan, I’ll roll with it.

I realized the other day that prior to this blogging challenge, this space had grown a little dry. Now there are reasons for that. First off, there hasn’t been a whole lot that has really gotten me riled up. Second, I spend a large amount of my computing time playing games. Third, the time NOT spent playing games is usually spent on a couple of web forums. And one of those is actually where a lot of writing HAS been appearing.

Yes, WordPress…I have been seeing other spaces in which to write. And I don’t regret it. Awhile back I found a website called Reclaim Your Game which is sort of a clearinghouse of game DRM talk, game talk, and all sorts of other things that made my inner geek get up and unleash one of those horrific Urkel style laughs before falling to the ground, wheezing and clutching desperately for that inhaler. Hey, there’s WORDS on these pages!

So, having blathered on about games enough the past few days and wanting a bit of a break…let’s talk books shall we (we shall. Really, you don’t get a vote, and I want to talk books, so it’s happening)? I finally finished the 4th (and final) book in Harry Turtledove’s ‘Settling Accounts’ series, In at the Death. If you’re at all interested in alternative historical fiction I cannot recommend that series enough. Basically (without giving [...]

Pure Genius!

For those who have not heard of the band Steel Panther, they’re an intentionally over the top ode to hair metal. To give some idea of the subject matter, song titles include Asian Hooker, Fat Girl (Thar She Blows) and Eatin Ain’t Cheatin. Anyway, they released a new video on their Myspace page called Community Property. I declare it the hands down greatest power ballad ever written. If you don’t laugh it proves you have [...]

Crack For Sale! Crack For Sale!

Just when I was wondering what the Hell to post about today, along comes my dealer (Gamersgate) and their selling every single thing they’ve developer and/or distributed for 50% off. As you can tell by checking out my GG profile with that little…widget thing, I’ve bought, oh, a FEW dime bags of joy from them. They keep having sales on stuff I want! I bet three quarters of those games were a minimum of half [...]

Dear Barack…Go Away For a Week

And perhaps spend some of that time…you know…presidenting. I find myself almost yearning for a return to the Dubya years. Remember what it was like when the President of the United States DIDN’T appear on camera 53 times every goddamn day of the year? Was Obama always a media whore or has that just come along with his presidency, like the secret prize at the bottom of a box of sugary breakfast cereal (you know, [...]

Edmonton’s Sports Myopia

A couple of years back, The Team 1260 was born…an all sports station…all sports, all the time. It seemed like it would be Valhalla. And it was…if your concept of Valhalla is the whining myopia known as Edmonton sports fans (in which case the Norse probably aren’t fond of you…and I wouldn’t screw with the Norse. Remember them? The Vikings? It’s a good rule of thumb to be nice to any peoples who travel in [...]

All Aboard The Jesus Train!

Well, yet again I had plans for today’s blog post…I was supposed to be drafting my first fantasy football team of the season, but NOOOOO. Seeing as the draft is set so stupidly early, the 2 bodies the league needed to join the enable the draft didn’t appear, so now the league is in limbo. Niiiiiice. In the interests of transparency I will say that I have had concerns about this league and the guy running [...]

Go Forth Retarded Commandos!

Seeing as I can’t sleep at the moment, I may as well work on this. ArmA 2…followup to ArmA 1 (I know, didn’t see THAT one coming, did ya?!). ArmA 1 was a big scale FPS/squad combat game. It was basically a sequel to Operation Flashpoint. It was big in to detail. It became a pretty good game after literally FOURTEEN PATCHES. Here, let me give an idea of how complex this game was with [...]

Hey Look, Tits in the Mail!

I have a post half written describing the (often hilarious) bug issues I encountered when trying the ArmA 2 demo, but I keep getting distracted. Yesterday was a bit of a boil over at the mock draft fucktards and today… So, awhile ago I subscribed to Blender…which started life as Maxim Blender (thought it’s notable the ‘Maxim’ part seemed to be getting pretty hard to find on the cover)…a music magazine. Now, Blender stopped printing [...]

Today’s Frustration

So, this weekend I have a Fantasy Football draft. Yes, it’s STUPIDLY early…frigging training camp hasn’t even started yet, but we’re gonna draft?!?! No, nobody will get screwed by injuries before the season even starts! Makes PERFECT sense…if you strap on a tin foil hat in the morning before hopping on the short bus. Anyway, I’ve been doing a few ten team mock drafts just to get the brain cranked up for judging others. Well, [...]
