What I’m Playing

She has entirely too many brains to have an ass like that. — Sam Elliott in Road House

So, yes, now that James and Janine are parents…Lori was officially the one closest to the birthdate. This simply proves that hating the expectant mother by picking a date weeks past the actual due date is the true path to victory. Anyway, I think everyone who jumped in had said $5 apiece, so we can pool it up whenever and either give it Lori herself or Kelly (so long as he promises not to spend it on dice).

I WAS going to post a followup on the Canadian government, but I find I’m in a good mood…and that would likely change by diving in to the cesspool known as Canadian Parliament. I WILL note how amazing it is that, according to the Conservatives, the economy basically went from ‘Nothing to worry about…buy some stock!’ to ‘The sky is falling, the sky is falling!’ in the time it took for them to nearly be kicked from the seat of power. Oh, and you’re welcome Ontario & Quebec…you keep scapegoating oil as the only environmental issue the country faces while the rest of us subsidize the Big 3 automakers continued production of gas guzzling SUVs in your provinces. Oh, and eat a dick.

And lastly, I STILL haven’t gotten around to watching the UFO TV series yet…I downloaded the first 3 seasons of Top Chef after getting hooked on it during last year’s 4th season…I’m done the first 2 and a third of the way through the 3rd. Once THOSE are done I’ll leap full bore in to UFO and The Wire.

That’s it. Merry Christmas, everyone! That’s all I’m saying…if you choose to be offended by it, that’s your fucking problem.

  • This is Sean Woods
    Music to my ears.
  • Having finished watching Season One, I am beginning to understand the love for McNulty.
  • This is Sean Woods
    Ah, McNulty.

I need a shirt that says "What would McNulty Do?"

Or "100% Pure Fucking McNulty." That's awesome.
  • Oh, and I liked the time McNulty crashed his car. That was 100% pure fucking McNulty. I'm laughing just thinking about it
  • Yeah, Rome was good. And Sean, from what I've heard, it was the same reasons that Carnivalle got cancelled. Carnivalle was expensive.

I wanted to post something on my own blog about The Wire, but it's just such a huge topic, really. I mean, after five seasons, trying to talk about it comprehensively is impossible. It just builds and builds and builds its world relentlessly, and it aims so very high in its ambitions.
  • Excellent. I would agree with your transaction.

By the way, seeing as I have it for my PC now I will give you my 360 copy of CoD4. And I've played the Hell out of Dead Rising, so you can have that one, too...unless you're a loser not interested in a mall full of zombies where almost anything can be a weapon.
  • NHL 09 is in the fold. It cost me Guitar Hero III, Madden 09 for the Wii and Madden 07 for the Wii but I think it will be well worth it.
  • Well, for downloadable titles, I've heard a lot of good things about both Castle Crashers and Braid, so maybe look at those.

For 'standard' games, Assassin's Creed was pretty cool, albeit a bit repetitive by the end. Call of Duty 4 was a REALLY well done game...the single player isn't massively long, but it's very well done. The multiplayer's just addictive as Hell. And actually, I've read on a few sports games type forums that Head Coach 09 might be worth looking for.
  • Trial, rather. And fuck your site for telling me I'm posting comments too quickly. If they can't handle the speed, they should get off the super highway.
  • Any other game-type suggestions? I suggest you download Ikaruga if you ever manage to drag your XBox to the platform it was intended for.

It's awesome, and I've only played the demo.
  • As soon as I can get NHL09 cheap, I'm getting it. I have itchy thumbs just thinking about it.

I like stranglehold because the Game Over doesn't take very long.

    I'm not very good.
  • I actually still haven't hooked my 360 up to the Internets...I always plan to get it all hooked up, and I never seem to get around to it. :) NHL 09 is a must own game, by the way...definitely snag that for yourself. And I quite liked Stranglehold (I THINK there's an MP component to it...), too.
  • You still have a 360, right? I have one now too. My gamertag is hadaad. If you want to do some online halo 3 or some online stranglehold (if that's even possible) let me know. I'm looking for cheap madden and NHL but not likely for the next couple weeks.

I'll have money for you the next time i see you!

Excellent - I'm sure you will enjoy the Wire.

The main character (McNulty) is so awesome that Jeremiah and I use his name as a noun.

    Example:

"I pulled a McNulty last night" (translated: "I got really drunk and took some girl home last night.")

I think once you get into the Wire, you'll find yourself asking "What would McNulty Do" (WWMD) in response to everyday situations.
  • Yes, I have seen Generation Kill. It was a fantastic miniseries that managed to not only be good, but also incredibly close to the source material. Really, really well done.

I'm going to have to check out Rome at some point down the road Sean, since both you and Lum have had very good things to say about it.

Viewing of The Wire shall begin in earnest next week. Following that shall commence viewing of UFO. Only then will I allow myself to start considering watching Rome.

    *too damn expensive, I mean.

I'm with the Legion on this one - The Wire is definitely one of the best series ever made. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeit. You gots ta get on that.

Carnivale is also one of my favourites.

The creators of Deadwood went on to develop a series called John From Cincinnati - while this show had promise, it was (very) poorly executed and became quite convoluted.

Oh, and here's another HBO series that died before its time - Rome. Fucking incredible TV series...the production values are incredible (which led, in part, to the series' demise - it was just to damn expensive).
  • Cliff: Immediately move The Wire to the top of your list. It is fantastic amazing sheeeeeeeet. [that'll make sense about season 3]. Funny, touching, cool. It is the best television show I've ever seen.
And yeah, I'm including BSG in that list, and you know how high I rank the B the S and the G.
Not that comparisons of truly great TV do much. I forgive HBO for all the back assward things they've ever done*, just as way of thanks for letting The Wire be finished.

Oh! This reminds me, I watched "Generation Kill" miniseries.. you had mentioned it a while back in a blog post. Anyways, the documentary/mini-series was REALLY good. It was actually adapted for tv by the same guys who did The Wire, and even has a few same cast members. Can't remember if you've already seen Generation Kill, but if not, put that one on the list too.

    * Canceling Carnivale, encouraging Chase to drag out Sopranos causing severe quality dilution in later seasons, allowing Entourage to continue [even though I watch], Canceling Deadwood 1 season before it was to end [although I gave up on deadwood earlier, so I'm giving lip service], Canceling Carnivale [oh those fucking bastards! but wait, I'm supposed to be forgiving.. yes, I forgive, The Wire makes up for it]
  • Heh...I suppose that is a bit of a giveaway, isn't it? "Well, it wasn't very long...Cliff's brimming with joy!" :)
  • liam
And just to say: It must have been a happy post. It finished before the "read entire article" thing could cut it off.
  • I make sure that everyone I come in contact with hears Merry Christmas at least three times before I'm done with them. And I lean forward after I say it, all expectant-like, so they can say Merry Christmas too. All this happy holidays bullshit! We need to save Christmas from the anonymizers.
  • The Kelly of yore, with his coat of the bottomless pockets, would never be unsure of the location of his dice...
  • Kelly
I was trying to go the other way by being like a week or two early to be nice but Lorry always the realist knew better! Oh and I probably wouldn't spend it on dice, i do have a set here somewhere...

    Awesome U.F.O fact:

S.H.A.D.O. (the good guys) pronounce "UFO" as "you-foe."

    Awesome.
